Transparent and local

Privacy without the fine print.

WebSafe processes protection signals locally in your browser. There is no telemetry, no user account and no data sent to the developer.

Overview

WebSafe does not send visited URLs, page content or download information to the developer or an external analytics service. The extension works within the local browser profile in Chrome, Brave and Chromium-based browsers.

Data processed locally

  • The URL and hostname of a visited page for local filtering decisions
  • Page titles, metadata and limited excerpts of visible text
  • Links and media addresses to identify suspicious embedded content
  • A download's filename, source, MIME type and browser-reported danger status
  • Settings, exception lists and aggregate blocking counters

Storage

Settings, manual website rules, domain exceptions and counters are stored using chrome.storage.local in the local browser profile. Manual rules contain the hostname, element selector, category and creation time. Image pixels and predictions are not stored permanently.

This website stores your manually selected language locally in your browser. Without a saved choice, it uses the browser language; languages other than German fall back to English.

Local image detection

The AI model is included in the extension; no model or program code is downloaded during use. Image pixels are temporarily resized for analysis. Results may be cached in memory and are not sent to the developer.

Data transfers

No images are uploaded to an analysis service. For images that cannot be read directly and for video thumbnails, WebSafe may fetch the original image URL again without cookies, referrer or redirects. The original image server sees this additional request. External links open the respective provider’s website; its privacy policy applies. Browser Safe Browsing operates independently.

Permissions

Page access supports filtering, image detection and manual selection. Download permission allows risky downloads to be stopped. An offscreen document decodes images and runs the bundled model locally. Permissions are used for the documented protection features.

Deleting data

Remove individual manual rules in WebSafe’s settings. Removing the extension deletes its local storage. Images and model results are only held temporarily in memory.

Open Source

The complete implementation, all filter rules and automated tests are available in the public GitHub repository.
